Disregarding the car itself (which looks like every other pie-in-the-sky speculative sketch that's been done since the early Seventies), turning the Alfa shield upside down is just silly. Better to do away with it completely here. More's the case that you can design an impressive modern interpretation and keep it as-is.

It looks flat wrong inverted. It's something else than what it was. It's not an interesting progression, it's a mistake.

That abomination came out from the Enterprise's subspace transporter, the day that it went gaga. Luckily, the poor thing didn't live long.

Yes, but that's what everyone expects them to do, just like people expected Jag to build cars that looked 20 years old, when new. If they come with something shocking, it will signal the that Alfa wants to go for the home run, instead of living in the past.

There's a huge difference between a useful corporate identity and a styling rut. And there's a difference between shaking up expectations and showing that you have no clue and are flailing about for gimmicks. By your logic BMW should drop the double kidneys (it's so unexpected!), Ferrari should discontinue red paint (how radical!), Porsche should adopt the styling language of the 1979 Ford LTD, and so on. Because a long tradition of doing something right or having a sense of continuity is just so much about living in the past, no?

Alfa's problem is not styling. That's more one of their current strong points. What they need instead is a corporate parent with some backbone to reintroduce them to the US market in an assertive manner, not some "shocking" upside-down version of a symbol that has served them well for decades. (Which is hardly shocking, anyway; it's more just confusing or silly.)

Some things are worth keeping. Sometimes expectations are valuable in a market. Sometimes styling gimmicks are a side act to core issues. Alfa wants to go for a home run, they need to play.
